Canada confronts a new relationship with the U.S.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has wrapped up his quick trip to Mexico City. He was there to strengthen ties with one big North American partner as Canada confronts a new relationship with the other, the U.S. A new Ipsos poll, exclusive to Global News, says 51 per cent of Canadians approve of how the federal government is managing relations, but as David Akin reports, people aren’t feeling the trust with their southern neighbours. | Global National

Carney’s office said he will be in New York from Sunday to Wednesday. From the archive in 2017:
With second United Nations speech, Justin Trudeau goes where no Liberal PM has gone before
In the 72 United Nations General Assemblies since the organization’s creation in 1946, a Canadian prime minister has shown up to speak just twelve times. In almost all the other cases, it was the Canadian foreign minister, not the prime minister, who took the speaking slot at the UNGA assigned to Canada. Trudeau also spoke in 2020, the last time a Canadian prime minister spoke to the UNGA. So Trudeau addressed the UNGA three times during his tenure, putting him in a tie with Stephen Harper as the prime minister who has addressed the UNGA most often. Interestingly, Carney’s current chief of staff, Marc-André Blanchard delivered Canada’s statement to the UNGA in 2018 and 2019 while serving as Canada’s ambassador to the UN | Globalnews.ca

Neither candidate has made a public declaration yet. | CP

Liberal MP Vince Gasparro, parliamentary secretary for combating crime, says Kneecap has “publicly displayed support for terrorist organizations such as Hezbollah and Hamas” that goes beyond artistic expression. “Canada stands firmly against hate speech, incitement to violence and the glorification of terrorism,” Gasparro said in his video. | Globalnews.ca

In some cases, companies like OpenResearch, a nonprofit funded by OpenAI, are experimenting with AI chatbots as part of the polling process. | Campaigns & Elections
Reader note
Many of you provide financial support for this seven-day-a-week newsletter via Patreon. Thank you! A note to those Patreon supporters: I’ve learned that some of you may be getting prompts from Substack to become a “paying subscriber” on this platform. You can safely ignore those messages. I will, at some point in the coming weeks, have special instructions for Patreon subscribers as a I realize one of the common complaints about this platform is frequent encouragements to become a “paid subscriber.” I’m working on it.
In the meantime, if you are not chipping in, could I encourage you to consider becoming a paid subscriber via Substack or click on this orange button and contribute via my Patreon page? Just a few bucks a month really helps out.
Alternately, some of you have chosen to make a one-time payment via e-transfer to jda@davidakin.com. That is much appreciated as well.

Defense Secretary Hegseth requires new 'pledge' for reporters at the Pentagon
Journalists must sign a pledge not to gather any information, including unclassified reports, that hasn't been authorized for release. Trump’s media enforcer is relishing his Jimmy Kimmel moment
“NPR has been defunded,” he said, cataloguing his victories under Trump. “PBS has been defunded. Colbert is retiring. Joy Reid is out at MSNBC. Terry Moran is gone from ABC..” Before Trump’s election victory, Carr often advocated against government intervention in speech. When a Democratic FCC commissioner called for a crackdown on electronic cigarette advertisements in 2019, Carr posted on Twitter, “Should the government censor speech it doesn’t like? Of course not. The FCC does not have a roving mandate to police speech in the name of the ‘public interest.’” | WaPo (🎁 link)
